Evaluation of Ḥadīth Narratives Related with the Animals Whose Meat is Forbidden to Eat.Nejla Hacioğlu - 2018 - Cumhuriyet İlahiyat Dergisi 22 (2):1191-1220.
As in every religious issue, the two main resources of Islām which are the Qur’ān and the Sunnah/ḥadīths are the first reference sources for deciding the things that are forbidden by Islam. There is no evidence in the Qur’ān that suggests specific types of animals are forbidden to eat except pork. Other than pork, only the animals which are slaughtered without the name of Allah, their blood and their carcass are forbidden to consume. Except these restricted ill-gotten meats, in the (...)

  3. Depression as unhomelike being-in-the-world? Phenomenology’s challenge to our understanding of illness.Tamara Kayali & Furhan Iqbal - 2013 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 16 (1):31-39.
Fredrik Svenaeus has applied Heidegger’s concept of ‘being-in-the-world’ to health and illness. Health, Svenaeus contends, is a state of ‘homelike being-in-the-world’ characterised by being ‘balanced’ and ‘in-tune’ with the world. Illness, on the other hand, is a state of ‘unhomelike being-in-the-world’ characterised by being ‘off-balance’ and alienated from our own bodies. This paper applies the phenomenological concepts presented by Svenaeus to cases from a study of depression. In doing so, we show that while they can certainly enrich our understanding of (...)

The Differences between Kochi Bey’s Treatises Presented to Murat IV and İbrahim I and the Comparison of the Treatises.Nejla Ceyhan - 2021 - Atebe 5:1-16.
In the 17th century, the Ottoman State began to feel its being unable to follow the developments in Europe and to keep up with the changing world order. Following the glorious years of the Ottoman Empire, solutions were presented from various circles upon the dissolution in the state order, the situation of the people and the reasons for all these. The first known of these solutions is the Kochi Bey Treatises presented to two different and successive sultans. Kochi Bey, who (...)

The seal of Prophethood (Khātamu al-nubuwwa) Sīra, Shamā’il, Khasā’is, Dalā’il, genres have been used and utilized within Islamic historical sources as testaments to the prophethood of Muḥammad. The Seal of the Prophethood as a sign has also been mentioned within the religious sources of the People of the Book. According to some narrative traditions, a number of the People of the Book have sought out this sign and consequently embraced Islam. There are Muslim traditions that mention the Seal of the (...)

A Role for Philosophers, Sociologists and Bioethicists in Revising the DSM: A Philosophical Case Conference.Browne Tamara Kayali - 2017 - Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Psychology 24 (3):187-201.
The creation of the latest version of psychiatry's 'bible' has been surrounded by a great deal of controversy. The latest revision, the DSM-5, contains several controversial diagnoses that have been the subject of much debate. One of the central criticisms of DSM-5 is that it pathologizes some behaviors that were previously considered simply problematic, or variations of normal behavior—for example, fidgetiness, noisiness, abundance of energy, shyness, anxiety, and bereavement. Diagnoses such as Binge Eating Disorder, Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder...

Does Sustainability Investment Provide Adaptive Resilience to Ethical Investors? Evidence from Spain.Eduardo Ortas, José M. Moneva, Roger Burritt & Joanne Tingey-Holyoak - 2014 - Journal of Business Ethics 124 (2):297-309.
Although sustainable and responsible investment (SRI) has quite recently become a hot research topic, scarcely any systematic research has been paid to the performance of this non-conventional approach to investment during the financial crisis that emerged in mid-2008 when the resilience of the financial markets was sorely tested. Such real-world resilience in practice is the subject of the current research which tests whether environmental, social and governance screens provides ethical investors with adaptive resilience in bull and bear market conditions by (...)

Shaping children through genetic and environmental means.Christopher Gyngell & Tamara Kayali Browne - forthcoming - Journal of Medical Ethics.
In ‘Parental Genetic Shaping and Parental Environmental Shaping’, Anca Gheaus argues there is a normative difference between parents using genetic means to influence the development of their child, and parents using environmental means to achieve the same ends. Genetic shaping but not environmental shaping, it is claimed, introduces a negative asymmetry in the child–caregiver relationship. In this paper, we argue that Gheaus’ argument fails as a critique of genetic shaping, and does not establish a moral difference between genetic and environmental (...)

I am grateful to the commentators for their thoughts on my paper. The commentaries present a variety of views on the proposal, ranging from the view that it has too much teeth, to the view that it does not have enough teeth, and come from a range of perspectives, reflecting the spirit of the panel I propose. I respond to the commentaries in themes, clarifying certain points along the way. Some commentators have interpreted me as implying that philosophers have a 'royal (...)

Is ‘gender disappointment’ a unique mental illness?Tereza Hendl & Tamara Kayali Browne - 2020 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 23 (2):281-294.
‘Gender disappointment’ is the feeling of sadness when a parent’s strong desire for a child of a certain sex is not realised. It is frequently mentioned as a reason behind parents’ pursuit of sex selection for social reasons. It also tends to be framed as a mental disorder on a range of platforms including the media, sex selection forums and among parents who have been interviewed about sex selection. Our aim in this paper is to investigate whether ‘gender disappointment’ represents (...)

  15. How Shoud We Understand Family-Centred Care?Suzanne Uniacke, Tamara Kayali Browne & Linda Shields - 2018 - Journal of Child Health Care 22 (3):460-469.
What is family-centred care of a hospitalized child? A critical understanding of the concept of family-centred care is necessary if this widely preferred model is to be differentiated from other health care ideals and properly evaluated as appropriate to the care of hospitalized children. The article identifies distinguishable interpretations of family-centred care that can pull health professionals in different, sometimes conflicting directions. Some of these interpretations are not qualitatively different from robust interpretations of the ideals of parental participation, care-by-parent and (...)

How Sex Selection Undermines Reproductive Autonomy.Tamara Kayali Browne - 2017 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 14 (2):195-204.
Non-medical sex selection is premised on the notion that the sexes are not interchangeable. Studies of individuals who undergo sex selection for non-medical reasons, or who have a preference for a son or daughter, show that they assume their child will conform to the stereotypical roles and norms associated with their sex. However, the evidence currently available has not succeeded in showing that the gender traits and inclinations sought are caused by a “male brain” or a “female brain”. Therefore, as (...)

  17. Is Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder Really a Disorder?Tamara Kayali Browne - 2015 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 12 (2):313-330.
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder was recently moved to a full category in the DSM-5 . It also appears set for inclusion as a separate disorder in the ICD-11 . This paper argues that PMDD should not be listed in the DSM or the ICD at all, adding to the call to recognise PMDD as a socially constructed disorder. I first present the argument that PMDD pathologises understandable anger/distress and that to do so is potentially dangerous. I then present evidence that PMDD (...)

Incentivising civility in clinical environments.Tamara Kayali Browne & Zohar Lederman - 2023 - Journal of Medical Ethics 49 (10):683-684.
Several months ago, an Israeli resident in emergency medicine engaged in a hunger strike to protest 26-hour shifts. His protest was part of a country-wide struggle of medical residents from all disciplines against such long shifts, arguing that they are a thing of the past, and that they harm patient care. While there is actually no evidence that long shifts harm patient outcomes, they very likely reduce civility among staff members and towards patients.1 Two kinds of strategies are possible to (...)

Studies demonstrating the benefits of ethical behavior at an individual level are scarce. The business ethics literature centers its analysis on unethical behaviors and their consequences, rather than ethical behaviors and their benefits. There is now considerable debate on the role of auditors in society and the function of accounting firms in the free market capitalist system. Specifically, the eminently ethical nature of the auditor’s work has been highlighted. Therefore, the aim of our paper is to show the impact of (...)

Vulnerability in Lockdown: Women and Agency during the Global Pandemic.Petra Brown & Tamara Kayali Browne - 2022 - International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics 15 (1):187-188.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many daughters, sisters, aunts, wives, and mothers found themselves with additional caretaking duties, and many were also vulnerable and unsafe in different constellations of relationships. Lockdown exacerbated this vulnerability. It also heightened stress, as vulnerable women were required to be constantly alert and risk aware in their reconfigured worlds. This not only included women in unsafe intimate relationships but also digital vulnerability for women as life moved online, economic risk for casually employed women unable to work (...)

Focusing on questions of genre, intellectual and material context, strategies of research, and strategies of performing recipes, the four papers of this special issue address two major issues. First, they shed new light on the relationship between (...)

The relationship between Francis Bacon's Sylva sylvarum and Giovan Battista Della Porta's Magia naturalis has previously been discussed in terms of sources and borrowings in the literature. More recently, it has been suggested that one can read these two works as belonging to a common genre: as collections of recipes or books of secrets. Taking this as a framework, in this paper I address another type of similarity between these two works, one that can be detected by looking at the (...)
